Top tips for women: taking time for you xxx

March 6, 2017

Women, how to find time for yourself and why this is so important.

As women we are often told we have it all, our careers, our families, children, friendships and getting involved in our community.  However, sometimes this can leave us with no time or energy for ourselves.

Randy Kamen Gredinger (psychologist and life coach specialising in women’s issues), explains “there’s a tremendous amount of stress and pressure put on women:being parents, being daughters, mothers, wives, professionals. All of these roles combined leave many of us not taking adequate care of ourselves-which is what sustains us and gives us energy to take care of all of these other responsibilities that we have”.

Whether you have demanding toddlers, waiting up at  night waiting for your teenager to get home, caring for elderly relatives or all of these, every woman needs a break to preserve their sanity. This means getting into the habit of taking time each day to do something for yourself.

How can we make this change?

Make yourself a priority. Amy Tiemann (author on this issue) says women seem to have trouble feeling that they are worthy of being on their list of priorities. She states taking of yourself will make you a better parent and partner and that you will be more fun to be around and more responsive to family.

So how can you fit putting yourself first on the list into your list?

Schedule it in like you would a dentist’s appointment or a business call.

If you have 5-10 minutes:-

  • Sit either outside or where you can look outside with a cup of coffee/tea. (Don’t have your phone with you!) Just watch the sky.

  • Move, Get up and stretch and walk around outside the house/office/climb the stairs.

  • If at home, call a friend for a chat, not to organise anything , just a chat.

  • Focus on your breathing. For 5 minutes. This can be done anywhere, whether in the office, in the car, at home. Just follow your breath.

  • If at home, focus on your pet for 5 minutes; pet/cuddle the dog/cat.

  • Listen and enjoy a couple of your favourite music tracks whilst sitting/resting.

If you have 15-30 minutes

  • Read a chapter of a book you have wanted to read or a magazine or do a crossword puzzle.

  • Go for a brisk walk near where you are whether at work or at home.

  • Potter at home doing little things you enjoy.

  • Have a bath. If you have young children, do this when another adult is around so you won’t be needed whilst you are having a soak. Maybe take in a glass of wine/iced water to sip.

If you have 30-60 minutes

  • Arrange to have a massage/pedicure/facial.

  • Take a nap.

  • Schedule a class you wanted to for fun.

  • Plan a long walk with a friend. Arrange it a few days before and stick to it. Just enjoy a stroll and chat.

These are just ideas to get you started and add the things that make you feel relaxed and restored.

Don’t do things you think you ‘should’ do but things that make you thrive.

Lots of love and kind regards, Jan xx
