What's the hype about hygge?

November 25, 2016

How many of us feel sluggish, lethargic, low and dare we say generally a lot more miserable in these colder months? I know I am certainly prone to feeling this way.

Well fear not! Let's do as the Danish do!

So hygge is a Scandinavian concept and a lot of us have been fascinated with it since it hit British shores last year.

What exactly is it? Well, author of 'How to Hygge' Signe Johnson states that: "Hygge is a Danish/Norwegian word that translates as a feeling of cosiness and is about being sociable and looking outward; it's about taking pleasure in the simple things in life, in fellowship with kith and kin."

Hygge has numerous concepts, nature is one of them. Us Bristish love to moan about the weather and somewhat hibernate during winter but our healthier Scandinavian friends believe that bad weather should not stop you from getting out in the open. "Nature calms you, it settles you and allows you to step back and reflect on the very essence of what living is about" says Signe. So basically put your wellies on and go and get a blast of good old Cornish fresh air (we know it makes us feel better).

Another aspect to it is food, the Scandinavian mentality is to really enjoy your food and to not feel guilty about it. Um pass me the pasty please. How true is it though that we often scoff something and then feel awful about it. Time to treasure and food and really savour it I reckon.

There is also an emphasis on home being where the heart is. Feeling comfy and cosy is a huge part it and the Danish believe that a hygge home is one that gives you a sense of safety, warmth and calm. Bring on the candles, fire, books and cosy blankets.

Isn't this the lushest concept? It's so simple but makes us think about the things that really are important. This has defiantely helped me make the most of the darker winter months rather than just waiting for them to pass.

If you feel like indulging in the cosy winter mentallity we have some treatments that fit perfectly with the hygge concept. For example, you can come with a friend to spend truly peaceful quality time together. Or you can come alone to the blissfully warm and cosy treatment space and have a soothing full body hot stones massage or a warming full body scrub.....

What do you reckon?!

Hope to see you soon!

Lots of kind warm hygggey regards!!
